122 Youths Arrested After Storming Rivers State Speaker’s Residence in Protest

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 122 youths who allegedly invaded the official residence of the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, during a protest in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. The protest was led by Chijioke Ihunwo, the State Chairman of the National Youths Council of Nigeria.

According to the state Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, the youths forcefully gained entry to the Speaker’s residence at Forces Avenue, Old GRA, Port Harcourt, with the intent to commit a felony. In the process, they damaged the gate to the property.

Security measures have been heightened at key locations in Port Harcourt, including the state House of Assembly complex, the Speaker’s residence, and other strategic sites to prevent any further disturbances.

The statement from the police command indicated that a distress call led to the deployment of tactical teams to the scene, resulting in the arrest of 122 individuals, including Chijioke Ihunwo. They were taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Port Harcourt for further investigation.

The incident highlights the tension and concerns that have recently surfaced in Rivers State, and the police are taking measures to maintain law and order in the area.
