The meeting between officials from the President Bola Tinubu-led administration and members of organised labour over the 30-day deadline to abide by the conditions laid out in a signed Memorandum of Understanding has been postponed.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the purpose of the meeting with the government is to reach a consensus on the demands and milestones that have not yet been fulfilled, along with the rationale behind them, before taking any further action.

A senior representative of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) told The PUNCH that the meeting will now take place on Tuesday of next week. The Federal Government requested the postponement, saying that “they shifted it because they did not remember that the supposed date was to be their Federal Executive Council.”

“The organised labour suspended the last planned strike action and gave the Federal Government 30 days to meet our demands,” he said.

Speaking further, he clarified that as organised labour, they had decided to call an organ meeting to evaluate the actions taken by the Federal Government once the ultimatum ends.

He added, “If the organs believe that what the government has done is not substantial and not in line with the agreement signed, they will give fresh directives on how to handle the situation without giving any further notice of industrial action.”

He said that we may take quick industrial action if the government ordered it and we would comply if it had not taken any action in the reckoning of the organs.

He did, however, note that the demands of organised labour are publicly available, and it is the responsibility of every Nigerian and worker to assess the situation and determine the proportion of our requests that the Federal Government has complied with.

He added that Nigerians and organised labour should be informed by the government whatever requests have been fulfilled thus far.

He did, however, imply that not all labour demands have been addressed by the federal government.

He went on to say that everything will be discussed and the best course of action determined at the following meeting.

Speaking with The PUNCH, Mr. Toro Nuhu, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress, said that the planned meeting between organised labour and the federal government would review the unfulfilled requests and evaluate the progress that has been done thus far.
