Anambra State government and the local police have jointly conducted a successful raid on a brothel in Oba, uncovering a harrowing case of child trafficking and prostitution. The operation, prompted by a whistleblower’s tip-off, revealed that the hotel was involved in trafficking underage girls and exploiting them for prostitution.

Key Points:
  • Rescue Operation: Acting on a tip-off and reports of suspicious activities around the brothel, the government, and local police conducted a raid, rescuing two underage girls and 18 other individuals who were being forced into prostitution.
  • Medical Examination: The rescued underage girls were immediately taken to the hospital for medical examinations and possible treatment by the ministry. Their well-being is a top priority for the authorities.
  • Commendation and Vow for Justice: The state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, commended the efforts of the security forces and pledged to ensure that justice is served. She expressed disappointment that despite the government’s anti-trafficking efforts, such illicit activities persist.
  • Trafficking and Exploitation: The investigation revealed that the brothel, known as ‘Ten Top’ in Oba, was involved in trafficking girls from various parts of the country for prostitution. The victims disclosed that they were either lured into the hotel by friends or relatives who promised them employment but were then trafficked.
  • Harsh Conditions: The victims explained that they were subjected to harsh conditions, with their earnings taken by their “madams.” They were forced to pay daily rent and meet certain financial targets, with harsh consequences if they failed, including physical abuse.
  • Legal Action: The suspects involved in this human trafficking operation have been arrested and are in police custody. They will be arraigned before the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate Court in Awka after further investigations.

This operation has brought to light the dark realities of human trafficking and exploitation, emphasizing the need for more robust efforts to combat such heinous crimes and protect vulnerable individuals, particularly minors.
