Abia State Government Initiates Community Development Programs for Rural Areas

The Abia State Government has unveiled plans to launch community development programs aimed at promoting socio-economic growth in rural areas. The program, known as “Community Choose Your Project,” will be implemented through the Abia State Community Social Development Development Agency.

Mr. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, revealed this strategic initiative after the State Executive Council meeting in Umuahia. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable development across the state, not just in major urban centers like Aba and Umuahia.

Under the “Community Choose Your Project” initiative, government officials will engage with various rural communities to assess their needs and preferences for infrastructure development. The communities will have the opportunity to select the projects they want the government to execute, provided the project cost does not exceed N15 million.

To ensure the success of the program, the government has introduced an equity participation model. Participating communities will be required to contribute 5% of the project cost, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility for the projects. This collaborative approach aims to encourage active community involvement and engagement.

Rev. Father Christian Anokwuru, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Policies and Interventions, encouraged interested communities to submit letters of application specifying their project choices. These projects will be jointly owned by the government and the benefiting communities, ensuring that the development efforts are sustained and community-driven.

In addition, every prospective community must establish a bank account to facilitate the transfer of project funds. This transparent financial arrangement will help streamline the execution of projects and promote accountability.

The Abia State Government’s commitment to rural development through community-driven initiatives is a positive step towards fostering even socio-economic growth and improving the living standards of residents in these areas.
