Labour Party’s Vice Presidential Candidate Disputes Supreme Court’s Ruling on 2023 Election

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has challenged the widely held belief that the Supreme Court affirmed Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the election. According to Baba-Ahmed, the apex court merely upheld what he considers an illegality declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Baba-Ahmed made this assertion during an appearance on Arise TV, following his boss Peter Obi’s press conference discussing the judicial process’s outcome after the election.

Peter Obi had taken his case to the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), which had upheld INEC’s declaration of Tinubu as the election’s winner.

The Supreme Court’s ruling ultimately affirmed Tinubu as the duly elected president. However, Baba-Ahmed emphasized that they accepted the judgment as the final legal step but did not view it as a valid decision, insisting that it merely upheld what they perceived as an illegality by INEC.

This statement reflects the continued debate and differing perspectives on the 2023 election’s outcome and the legal processes surrounding it.
