The Presidency has accused Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), of playing partisan politics in the Imo state governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 11. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, made this allegation, stating that Ajaero, along with the Labour governorship candidate, is engaging in partisan politics despite claiming to fight for all workers in the state. Onanuga also criticized the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for buying into Ajaero’s assertions regarding workers’ rights.

The presidential aide’s response follows a meeting between Ajaero and the Labour Party’s governorship candidate, Athan Achuonu, and comes in the wake of a strike declaration by NLC and TUC leaders in Imo State due to an attack on Ajaero and other labor leaders. They have threatened a nationwide strike commencing on November 14 if their grievances are not addressed, and have even called for the isolation of the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, from airports and international blacklisting.

This recent labor action has disrupted aviation activities in Imo State, with airports in Owerri and Abuja experiencing worker withdrawals, leading to stranded travelers and flight disruptions. The situation reflects the ongoing tensions between labor unions and the government in the state.
