President Tinubu Insists on Improved Power Supply Before Electricity Tariff Hike

In a recent revelation, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the need for Nigeria to achieve consistent and incremental power supply before considering an increase in electricity tariffs. This stance by the President halted the implementation of a tariff hike and instead called for a subsidy to cover power consumption nationwide.

Minister Adelabu shared this information during a press conference in Abuja, addressing the ongoing discussion regarding a cost-reflective tariff that could potentially lead to higher electricity costs for consumers.

Subsidy Continues Due to Regular and Incremental Power Supply Goals

Adelabu emphasized that achieving a cost-reflective tariff cannot happen overnight, and he mentioned that the government is still subsidizing power up to the present day. He stressed the critical importance of the power sector in the country, noting that tariffs should have been adjusted months ago to ensure liquidity in the system.

However, Adelabu clarified that the delay in implementing the cost-reflective tariff is driven by political considerations and a sense of empathy for the Nigerian population. President Tinubu’s directive insists on first accomplishing consistent and incremental power supply to avoid additional financial burdens on the citizens.

This development underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the power sector’s performance and reliability before making adjustments to electricity tariffs. It reflects the administration’s determination to balance the needs of the people with the economic viability of the power sector.
