Imo State Governor Issues Apology for Assault on NLC President, Calls for Civilized Dialogue

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has issued a public apology for the assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, during a workers’ protest in the state last week. The incident, orchestrated by suspected political thugs, occurred amid a strike declared by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Imo State, leading to the suspension of all flights as the gubernatorial election approached.

Governor Uzodimma, initially critical of Ajaero’s presence in the state, expressed regret and apologized during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today. He clarified that he was unaware of the NLC president’s visit and condemned the assault, distancing his government from the incident.

“I was unaware of the presence of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in my state. My initial response was to condemn the action. I have never been at odds with the labor union,” Governor Uzodimma stated.

He further emphasized his commitment to non-violence, apologizing for the unfortunate incident that took place in his state. The Governor urged a more civilized approach to addressing concerns, expressing remorse on behalf of his government.

“Moving forward, I also hope he approaches matters in a more civilized manner. That was the essence of my point. For a native of my state to take to the streets without engaging me, without presenting the allegations to me,” he added.

In response to the assault, the NLC directed aviation unions to blacklist the Imo airport and declared Governor Uzodimma persona non-grata. The incident raises questions about the need for open dialogue and a peaceful resolution to labor disputes in the state.
