House of Representatives Adjourns Plenary to Address Labour Strike Crisis

In response to the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the House of Representatives has taken decisive action, adjourning plenary to address the ongoing industrial dispute. The move aims to enable the legislative leadership, under Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, to take urgent steps to resolve the lingering issues between organised labour and the government led by President Bola Tinubu.

The decision to adjourn followed the consideration and adoption of a motion titled “Matters of Urgent Public Importance,” presented by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu. Representing Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State, Kalu, a member of the All Progressives Congress, urged the House to engage with organised labour to find common ground in the interest of the nation.

During the plenary, lawmakers expressed their concerns about the hardships faced by Nigerians nationwide due to the ongoing strike. Emphasizing the urgency of resolving the dispute, they called for swift action to bring an end to the impasse.

In his ruling before the adjournment, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen assured the public that the leadership of the House would promptly engage with their counterparts to address the issues raised by organised labour. As a result, all items on the Order Paper, including the consideration of bills and motions, were suspended, and the House adjourned until Thursday.
