Chipmaker MediaTek has introduced its latest mobile silicon, the Dimensity 8300, designed to bring on-device generative AI capabilities to more affordable Android phones. This move mirrors Qualcomm’s recent announcement of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, targeting phones below the priciest premium tier with on-device generative AI.
While specific applications for generative AI on the Dimensity 8300 were not disclosed, MediaTek joins Qualcomm in emphasizing the advantages of on-device processing over cloud-based solutions. Both companies highlight faster responses, personalized insights, and functionality outside mobile network coverage areas as key benefits of on-device generative AI.
While MediaTek did not provide detailed performance metrics for generative AI on the Dimensity 8300, the chip is expected to offer lower capabilities than the premium Dimensity 9300. The Dimensity 8300 can support large language models with up to 10 billion parameters, catering to various AI tasks.

Beyond generative AI, MediaTek highlighted overall improvements in the Dimensity 8300 compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 8200. These include a 20% increase in CPU speeds, 30% better power efficiency, a 60% boost in GPU performance, and 55% improved power efficiency. The chip’s AI Processing Unit, shared with the Dimensity 9300, enhances performance for conventional AI tasks like photo enhancement.
The Dimensity 8300 is expected to contribute to longer-lasting batteries and improved connectivity with accessories such as earbuds and game pads. While the chipmaker did not disclose specific phone brands adopting the Dimensity 8300, the previous Dimensity 8200 has been featured in devices like the Vivo V29 Pro and Vivo V27 Pro.
