The foremost Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has pushed the Federal Government to extradite Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa, who the military accuses of causing the turmoil in the Southeast, by using Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with Finland.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, asserted on Tuesday that Ekpa, who is presently stationed in Finland, is impeding the efforts of security personnel in the Southeast.

Speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Musa claimed that the agitator was using Finland as a shield and that “Simon Ekpa is sabotaging our efforts in the Southeast.”

However, in a statement released on Wednesday during an interview with Punch Newspaper, Ohanaeze Secretary General Ambassador Okey Emuchay stated that Ohanaeze endorsed Musa’s proposal.

Everyone, he said, was worried about the worsening security conditions in the Southeast after the factional head of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) organisation enforced lockdown.

Expressing worries regarding the security concerns in the Southeast, Emuchay said, “So, the statement yesterday at the hearing of the House of Representatives tells the story as to what we have been saying all along. It is a matter for the Federal Government of Nigeria to handle, as Ohanaeze or the states in the Southeast are subordinate to the Federal Government.

“The Federal Government has a diplomatic relationship with Finland, they (Finland) have an embassy in Abuja, and that diplomatic channel is what Ohanaeze is asking to be activated. Ohanaeze is very pleased that the Chief of Defence Staff made a public pronouncement on the matter of Simon Ekpa and we are happy with it.”

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Ekpa had demanded that the separatist group’s lock-down in the Southeastern states be maintained after the federal government had refused to free Nnamdi Kanu, the group’s leader, despite court orders demanding his release.
