Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial hub, is losing N4 trillion year due to severe traffic congestion, according to a new study by the Danne Institute for Research.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the study “Behavioural Causes of Traffic Congestion in Lagos,” which stressed the necessity of acting quickly to reduce the financial and social consequences, was funded by the Bank of Industry and Africa Finance Corporation.

According to the report, Lagos residents commute for 2.21 hours on average every day, with 45% spending more than that.

Franca Ovadje, Executive Director of the Danne Institute for Research, asserts that the massive loss would have hindered financing for vital sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

The main causes identified by the research are a variety of behavioural variables, including buses picking up passengers, violating traffic laws, agberos’ conduct at bus stops, and inadequate road infrastructure.

Ovadje emphasised that because of the crippling effects of traffic on day-to-day living, Lagos’s population of 21 million people is not translating into corresponding output.

According to the research, the respondents’ biggest issue was traffic congestion, and their solutions revolved around constructing, maintaining, and mending roads in addition to outlawing agberos and aggressively enforcing traffic laws.

The research recommends that government authorities prioritise the implementation of the proposals in order to enhance efficiency, attract investments, and earn substantial sums of internally generated revenue through law enforcement.
