According to a New York Times article, another prisoner in a federal facility in Arizona stabbed Derek Chauvin, the former US police officer who was found guilty of killing George Floyd in a case that provoked rallies against racism and police brutality, on Friday.

The Times, citing unidentified sources, reported that Chauvin, a white prisoner serving a 22-and-a-half-year sentence for killing Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, in Minneapolis in May 2020, was attacked with a makeshift knife by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson.

According to the report, Chauvin was stabbed numerous times and taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. His condition was not immediately known.

The victim and the attacker were not named by the US Federal Bureau of Prisons, despite their confirmation to AFP that there had been an assault at the facility.

“Responding employees initiated life-saving measures for one incarcerated individual,” the bureau said in a statement. “The incarcerated individual was transported… to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation.”

A bystander’s video of Chauvin’s murder of Floyd went viral, sparking widespread protests against racial injustice and police brutality both domestically and abroad. Floyd’s cry, “I can’t breathe,” which he repeated, served as a rallying point for the demonstrators.

In April 2021, Chauvin was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder, three counts of third-degree murder, and two counts of second-degree manslaughter following a public trial that attracted millions of viewers. In Minnesota, he was the first white police officer found guilty of the murder of a Black person.

He petitioned the US Supreme Court to overturn his conviction, but the court denied his request earlier this month. He asserted in a recent documentary that his punishment and trial were “a sham” and that he was a scapegoat for a “broken system”.

Chauvin’s case also prompted a federal investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department, which found that the department had a pattern of using excessive and discriminatory force, especially against Black and Native American people. The Justice Department said in June 2023 that the department “unlawfully discriminates against Black and Native American people when enforcing the law”.

In addition, Floyd’s family launched a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Minneapolis, which resulted in the highest pre-trial settlement in US history for a civil rights case: $27 million.

Former coworkers characterised Chauvin as a workaholic, inflexible, and silent police officer who frequently worked in the most dangerous parts of the city. In addition to 22 internal complaints and investigations—the majority of which were dropped without disciplinary action—he was awarded four medals for his service. The only exception was a disciplinary letter he got in 2007 for yanking a white woman aggressively out of her car while her infant was crying because she had been speeding.
