42 Palestinian detainees will be freed by Israel on Saturday as part of an agreement with the Hamas movement, which governs the Gaza Strip. According to Al Jazeera and Haaretz, the inmates, who were detained on accusations ranging from stone-throwing to attacks on police officers, comprise 18 women and 24 young boys.

The two parties agreed in a mediated negotiation that the release would only take place if the Israeli captives held by Hamas in Gaza were first released. Two Israeli citizens and the bodies of two Israeli soldiers who were taken prisoner by Hamas during the 2014 Gaza War are thought to be the hostages.

The publications, quoting Israeli prison officials, said that the Palestinian prisoners at Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank will receive medical examinations by the International Red Cross before being returned to their native residences, such as the West Bank or East Jerusalem.

As part of the agreement with Hamas, Israel has released two groups of Palestinian inmates. This is the second group. On October 19, 2023, the first batch of 26 prisoners was freed from custody. According to the agreement, Israel would release 104 Palestinian inmates in total, and in exchange, Hamas will be expected to liberate four Israeli hostages. In light of the continuous hostilities and violence in the area, the prisoner swap is viewed as an unusual show of collaboration between the two sides.
