The National Education Repository and Data Bank (NERD) system, a centralised electronic platform for educational data, is about to become live thanks to approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

In announcing the permission, Education Minister Tahir Mamman highlighted how NERD can serve as a “one-stop shop for educational information” and how it can improve the accuracy of academic records. The goal of the NERD system, which has the support of important parties since 2014, is to exchange, preserve, and market educational content.

In the person of Permanent Secretary Andrew Adejo, Mamman emphasised the cooperation with organisations such as the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and the National Universities Commission. The roles of NERD were described in a released statement; among them was the facilitation of data sharing between organisations such as NYSC and ITF.

NERD will be run by the private sector with an emphasis on sustainability and efficiency. The press release emphasised the necessity of legislative provisions to guard against political fluctuations interfering. Though the government has promised better cooperation and data preservation, worries about possible meddling continue.

Attending the engagement were stakeholders such as the Director General of NYSC and the National Librarian. It is anticipated that the NERD plan will hold workshops across the country to train pertinent individuals.
