A United Nigeria Airlines aeroplane headed for Abuja made a dramatic landing in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, over the weekend.

According to information obtained by Anaedoonline.ng, the aircraft arrived at Asaba International Airport in Delta State after taking off from Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos on Sunday and travelling to Abuja.

It was discovered that the passengers were unaware they were in the incorrect airport until the cabin crew greeted them with “Welcome to Abuja” upon their arrival in Asaba.

Salihu Yakasai, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was one of the upset passengers. He used his verified X account, @dawisu, to criticise the airline.

He regretted that the cabin staff had declared they were arriving in Abuja even though they knew the flight had been diverted.

“Nigeria, my country. We departed Lagos about an hour ago on @flyunitedng to Abuja, and upon arrival, the cabin crew confidently announced that we have arrived in Abuja, only for us to realize that we landed in Asaba. Apparently, our pilot was given the wrong flight plan from Lagos,” he posted.

The plane was diverted to Abuja after spending roughly thirty minutes on the tarmac, and the passengers made a safe landing there.

Achilleu-Chud Uchegbu, the airline’s head of corporate communications, responded to the news by saying that the flight was rerouted to Asaba because of inclement weather.

He said the pilot had received sufficient information on the diversion, adding that confusion among the passengers resulted from the cabin crew’s incorrect announcement following a safe landing in Asaba.

But Uchegbu pointed out that as the destination weather improved, the plane had successfully arrived in Abuja.

The statement reads: “A United Nigeria Airlines flight, NUA 0504, operating from the MM2 in Lagos en route Abuja on Sunday, November 26, 2023, was temporarily diverted to the Asaba International Airport due to poor destination weather.

“At all material time, the Pilot of the aircraft was aware of the temporary diversion and was properly briefed. However, a wrong announcement was made by the cabin crew upon landing safely in Asaba, creating confusion among the passengers.”
