Claims that bad weather was the reason for United Nigeria Airlines’ Sunday diversion of their Lagos-Abuja flight to Asaba have been refuted by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Festus Keyamo.

Keyamo said this on Monday in Abuja at a meeting with airline operators.

Due to bad weather on Sunday, United Nigeria Airlines’ aircraft from Lagos to Abuja was rerouted to Asaba, the capital of Delta State, according to Anaedoonline.ng.

Passengers were confused when Flight NUA 0504, which was scheduled to arrive in Abuja, was diverted to Asaba International Airport in Delta State. The flight had taken off from the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Terminal 2.

“A United Nigeria Airlines flight, NUA 0504, operating from the MM@ in Lagos en route Abuja on Sunday, November 26, 2023, was temporarily diverted to the Asaba International Airport due to poor destination weather,” the airline said in an explanation of the reroute.

Keyamo called a meeting of the leaders of aviation regulatory bodies in response to growing safety concerns in the aviation industry.

The minister refuted the reasoning based on weather, saying, “It was evident that the pilot was travelling to Asaba, not Abuja, when he took off from Lagos.

“Whereas the flight was headed to Abuja. There was no weather problem in Abuja. It was a question of a wet lease where the pilot and the crew were all foreigners, not Nigerians,” he revealed.
