After Governor Abba Yusuf was dismissed from office by an Appeal Court order, Kano State citizens protested in the streets.
The Appeal Court upheld the tribunal’s decision, which had originally dismissed Yusuf on September 20, 2023, two weeks ago. The tribunal was presided over by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay.
Because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not given Yusuf, the candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), the tribunal declared 165,663 votes to be illegal.

As a result, Yusuf’s total number of votes dropped to 853,939, while Nasir Ganuwa, the opponent of the All Progressives Congress (APC), managed to hold onto 890,705 votes.
Yusuf contested the tribunal’s judgement, calling it “unfair” and a “miscarriage of justice,” but the court took Ganuwa’s side.
In an effort to keep the peace, security personnel first prevented several scheduled protests after the court’s ruling.
Still, protests recommenced, with participants expressing solidarity with Yusuf and calling for justice.
Residents in Kano have been advised by the police not to take part in any public demonstrations in response to the Appeal Court ruling.

In spite of this, demonstrators have persisted in voicing their disapproval around the state.
