Bola Tinubu has been instructed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to make sure that his cabinet colleagues do not leave the country before their scheduled appearance before the National Assembly to defend the 2024 budget.

At a joint meeting of the National Assembly on Tuesday, Tinubu submitted a proposal worth N27.5 trillion and requested the lawmakers to approve the budget within a 30-day period.

In response, Akpabio stated that the Senate will review the 2024 budget on Thursday and Friday for first and second readings, respectively. The plenary will then be adjourned till December 12 in order to hold budget defence sessions with the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

Additionally, he made a plea to the ministers and heads of government agencies not to accept any travel invitations that would make it impossible for them to respond to the National Assembly committees’ request for them to defend their estimates.

He said, “We assure you that the proposals you have come to present will be diligently considered accordingly. We approach this moment with a sense of duty, unity, and purpose. To ensure maximum attention to the review of the Year 2023 Budget performance and the consideration of the Year 2024 Proposal, we request that Mr President would mandate Honorable Ministers and Heads of Agencies to avoid any travelling engagements that would prevent them from honouring our invitation to promptly appear before our committees to defend their budget estimates.
