UPDATE: NDLEA Detainee Seeks N100m Compensation, Freedom

A man has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Nigeria, demanding his release and N100 million in damages after being held without charge or trial by the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) since October 5.

Mr. Obiora Samuel, the plaintiff, alleged that the NDLEA’s arrest and detention of him was illegal, unconstitutional, and void. He is a resident of FESTAC Town, Lagos.

In addition, he requested that the court rule that the NDLEA infringed upon his fundamental right to freedom.

Benson Ndakara, his attorney, pleaded with the court to consider the request on Wednesday, pointing out that the NDLEA had been served for more than a month and had not yet submitted a counter-affidavit.

Juliana Imaobong Uroabuchi, the NDLEA attorney, requested further time to reply, citing her elderly mother’s illness as the reason for the delay.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo adjourned the case till December 1, 2023, for definite hearing.
