Nigeria sent a sizable team to the COP28 Climate Change Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The list of Nigerian delegates to the Climate Change summit has incited public uproar, with many Nigerians taking to social media to question why certain names were included on the alleged list.

Nigeria sent 1,411 participants to the summit, which is the third-highest number, according to the list made public by the event organisers last week.

Nonetheless, the Presidency made it clear that, out of the 1,411 delegates, fewer than 100 were supported by the federal government across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

Yakubu Shendam, the NNPP spokesman, said in an interview with Daily Trust that the outcry over the enormous number of delegates attending the COP28 Summit was needless.

Shendam said that the delegation of Nigeria to Dubai is one of the stakeholders in the grave threat that climate change threatens to all Nigerians and to mankind as a whole.

He said, “Well, when issues affect the whole of humanity globally, it’s always good for stakeholders to put their hands on deck to know what they can do to solve the problem.

“So, for us at the NNPP, we’ve always maintained that humanity is very precious to us, and the conference in Dubai has to do with climate change, which poses an existential threat to humanity. Nigeria’s delegation to Dubai is part of the stakeholders.”

When questioned further about the necessity of the sizable delegation and the corresponding costs in light of the dire economic circumstances facing the nation, he insisted that “humanity comes before economy.” Without humanity, an economy cannot exist.

“So, no expenditure is too much when it comes to tackling climate change, which threatens the very existence of all Nigerians and humanity generally.”
