UPDATE: Why Tinubu Didn’t Speak At COP28 Summit As Planned – FG

According to the Federal Government, President Bola Tinubu did not make the scheduled speech at the COP 28 Climate Change Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), because it was superfluous.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, President Tinubu was scheduled to speak at the Summit on Friday with other heads of state. However, he did not show up, raising concerns about the nation’s attendance at the gathering.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, told Premium Times over the weekend that his country is sick of platitudes and is now more focused on taking concrete steps.

US To Invest $12 Billion In Nigerian Climate Action

According to Tuggar, it takes more than just making pretentious speeches—it takes action.

He said: “Nigeria is 100 per cent for action. The speeches, to be honest, as good as they may be, are mostly a repeat of pledges or promises, and Nigeria is saying enough is enough; it’s time for action.”

According to Tuggar, the administration desired a shift in perspective regarding the conference, moving away from flashy speeches that are given year after year with little to no advancement.

He added: “The president was in the hall, he waited, he was going to give the speech, he listened, and he decided, perhaps, that was not the time to give the speech. There were other engagements that he needed to be involved in that would be more productive.”

According to Tuggar, Nigeria is leading the negotiations behind closed doors to make sure that wealthier nations, who account for the majority of the emissions driving global warming, make up for the losses and damages suffered by developing countries.

The minister added that Nigeria’s 4D foreign policy, which addresses migration and development, aligns with the current discussions on climate change.

The minister stated that Nigeria was well-suited to gain from the loss and damage fund, which was operationalized on the first day of the conference and praised by many Nigerians.
