LATEST: Russia To Hold Presidential Elections In Ukraine

There are reports that the Central Election Commission of Russia has approved the holding of the next presidential election in partially seized regions of Ukraine.

The Federal Security Service and the Russian Armed Forces have reportedly voiced confidence in the viability of holding elections in places where hostilities are still raging, according to Interfax.

According to Naija News, this declaration being made as the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches.

According to the Moscow Times, the CEC is permitted by Russian law to organise elections in areas that are subject to martial law, but only after conferring with the FSB and the Defence Ministry.

The annexation of multiple territories in Ukraine has been declared by the Kremlin. Kherson, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk are among the impacted areas.

Nikolai Bulayev, deputy chairman of the CEC, stated, “The electoral system of the four [occupied regions] is not only in working order, but it’s highly professional.”

Vladimir Putin, the current president of Russia, is running for a fifth term in office. With Russia’s current political climate, a victory is anticipated.

The presidential election is set for March 15–17 of the following year.
