Vice President’s Office Lavishes N10m on Hotel Bills for Guests of Tinubu’s Daughter

Documents retrieved from the BudgIT Govspend platform reveal, in a startling discovery, that the Office of the Vice President of Nigeria paid a whopping N10 million to settle hotel bills for guests of Chief Bola Tinubu’s daughter, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.

The payment, which was made to Royal Pacific Group on November 17, 2023, is noteworthy since it is the first time that public monies have been utilised to pay for a private citizen’s guest accommodations.

The payment description explicitly states, “Payment in favour of Fraser Suites, Abuja, Nigeria, for the settlement of hotel accommodation bills for the service rendered to guests of Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.”

Folashade Tinubu-Ojo is well-known among Nigerian traders and holds the title of Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, but she is not an elected official in the government.

This financial transaction is a part of an ongoing payment series that began on June 11, 2019, when Royal Pacific Group was regularly used by several government departments to pay for lodging bills. But this information represents an unparalleled misappropriation of public cash for visitors hosted by a private resident.

There has been no response to requests for clarity from important members of the Vice President’s office or the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. The material for this piece was obtained via the Open Treasury Portal, which is accessible to the general public, by the independent investigative journalism platform FIJ.
