Under the auspices of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are poised to reshape the geopolitical landscape of West Africa by pushing ahead with bold ambitions for political and economic union.
Highlighting political, economic, and monetary aspects, General Abdourahamane Tiani of Niger presented comprehensive proposals that “signalled a significant shift away from established regional blocs.” With recent coups, military power has taken over all three countries, prompting this initiative.
At a meeting in Bamako, senior AES diplomats emphasised the critical roles of development, defence, and diplomacy. To strengthen the economic underpinnings of the emerging confederation, a committee researching an economic and monetary union, an investment bank, and a stabilisation fund are among the proposed initiatives.

Midway through September, military commanders formally established the AES with a mutual defence agreement under the Liptako-Gourma Charter, reaffirming their dedication to collective security.
AES countries may become isolated from the larger West African Economic Community as a result of the decision to leave the West African Monetary Union, specifically the West African CFA franc linked to the Euro.
With the words, “The AES extends beyond a defence pact, projecting its evolution towards a robust economic alliance,” Burkina Faso’s General Ibrahim Traoré declared unity.
