Senators React Tinubu’s Minister Allocates N1 billion for Foreign Trip

During the defence of the 2024 expenditure, the Senate Committee on Trade, Industry, and Investment grilled Minister Doris Nkiruka-Anite Uzoka about a projected N1 billion expenditure for a trip to Geneva.

The Senate Committee on Trade, Industry, and Investment voiced strong concerns to the Ministry’s proposed spending of an astounding N1 billion for a trip to Geneva during the defence of the 2024 budget, which coincided with this close examination.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State, questioned the allocation at the meeting, calling on the minister to use internal knowledge to reduce expenses.

Oshiomhole stated, “I see that you intend to travel to Geneva next year, and you have budgeted over one billion Naira for that. We can’t keep going on with over-bloated teams on abroad trips. Use the experts we have in your offices in that country to save cost.”

Oshiomhole also accused the minister of neglecting her duties in favor of constant presence at the Bank of Industry.

“Madam, sit in your office and work for Nigerians. I have gone there twice. You are always in the BOI. If you preferred BOI, you should have declined the President’s nomination to be minister,” he disclosed.

Oshiomhole’s insistence on the lack of hard trade balance data raised concerns about the ministry’s data management, even though the minister had presented the ministry’s commitment to economic growth, job creation, and ongoing programmes for industrialization and investment. Claims were made that such data exists within other government agencies.
