According to a story by The BBC on Thursday, four healthcare professionals were found guilty of physically and psychologically abusing an elderly patient on video and were subsequently sentenced to prison.

On December 8, Ame Tunkara and Morountaro Adefila were sentenced to four months in prison after being found guilty of maltreatment and willful neglect.

In a similar vein, on November 14, Danny Ohen and Bridget Aideyan were given prison sentences of six months and four months, respectively, for the same offences.

The elderly woman’s family discovered bruising on her arm in February 2020, when she was suffering from vascular dementia and was mute. This led to the discovery of the abuse. They mounted a covert camera because they were worried about her safety and got footage during a four-day period.

Disturbing images of the old woman being hit with a pillow, handled roughly, and treated disrespectfully were captured on camera.

The woman tragically died in October, and one of the police officials expressed sadness, saying, “She should not have spent any of her remaining years suffering such ill-treatment.”

The incident emphasises how crucial it is to exercise caution and take precautions to safeguard those who are more susceptible in medical settings.
