A study listing human rights violations committed by Amnesty International under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration from 2015 to 2023 has been made public amid birthday greetings for the man.

Amnesty International brought attention to a number of atrocities committed by Buhari on his 81st birthday, including the murder of 350 Shiite Muslims in Zaria, the unlawful death of 150 pro-Biafra protestors, and the violent suppression of #EndSARS demonstrators.

The organization’s post, titled “Gross Human Rights Violations Under Buhari Administration,” detailed the extrajudicial killings of pro-Biafra protestors from August 2015 to August 2016 as well as the mass murder that occurred in Zaria in 2015.

The Buhari administration was also criticised in the study for not prosecuting those responsible, which escalated violence between farmers and herders and claimed at least 3,641 lives during a three-year period.

The group brought to light the mistreatment endured by female insurgency survivors from Boko Haram, who were subjected to additional atrocities by security personnel and the CJTF.

Between January and September 2019, at least 19 journalists were attacked, detained, subjected to abuse, intimidated, and threatened; some even went into hiding.

Buhari’s legacy was portrayed negatively in Amnesty International’s report, which also noted that Garba Shehu, the former president’s spokesperson, did not immediately reply to demands for comment on the accusations.
