The move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been met with disapproval by elders and leaders in Rivers State, led by the late Governor Rufus Ada-George.

Additionally, the elders denounced the recent switch by 27 state House of Assembly members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This was said in a statement released following an emergency gathering of the leaders and elders on Sunday in Port Harcourt, which was signed by Ada-George, the Pan Niger Delta Forum’s pioneering spokesperson, Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, and 12 other people.

The elders were also upset that neither Fubara nor his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, answered their letters requesting a meeting to discuss the state’s escalating political situation.

The explosion at the House of Assembly Complex on October 29, 2023, and the purported attack on Fubara by certain security personnel on Monday, October 30, 2023, were specifically mentioned by them as embarrassing and hazardous events occurring in the state.

Parts of the communiqué read, “The Forum regretted that neither Governor Siminialayi Fubara nor Chief Nyesom Wike responded to our letters seeking for an audience with each of them.

“The attempt to impeach the Governor of Rivers State barely about six months in office without explaining to the good people of the state the reasons and infractions of law is unacceptable.

“The Forum condemned every form of violence and lawlessness in Rivers State and therefore demand proper investigation of the crisis and those responsible be brought to justice.”

The Forum pushed President Bola Tinubu to build on his previous intervention, emphasising that the Niger Delta area, the Federal Government as a whole, and Rivers State might all be impacted by inaction.
