UPDATE: Poverty Knows no Ethnicity or Religion – Peter Obi

In honour of International Human Solidarity Day, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), reminded Nigerians that despite rising national tensions, togetherness should be prioritised. He also revealed that issues of hunger, poverty, and injustice affect all people, regardless of their ethnicity or religion.

Obi underlined the need to remove racial and religious obstacles that stand in the way of national advancement in a message sent via his official X Twitter. He advocated for using Nigeria’s many ethnic and cultural identities to advance the nation.

Concerned about the increased polarisation, Obi linked the differences to religious and ethnic feelings that were stoked by “bad politics and elite insensitivity.”

2023: Please Don’t Vote Based On Religion, Ethnicity – Peter Obi To Nigerians

Obi stated, “Unfortunately, we have, today as a nation, become more sharply divided than ever. Our dear nation is more polarised today than it has ever been, fueled by overwhelming tribal and religious sentiments among the people resulting in the unwillingness of Nigerians to cooperate and work together towards achieving national growth and development. This is clearly the result of bad politics and elite insensitivity.”

In order to emphasise how urgent it is to address these problems, he said that Nigeria’s Social Cohesion Index had decreased from 44.2% in 2021 to 39.6% in 2022, according to a research by the Africa Polling Institute.

Obi called on government leaders and citizens to come together in support of social justice and equality, pointing out how universal issues like hunger, poverty, and injustice are. In order to address the urgent problems facing the country, he underlined the need for a united front.

“I, therefore, wish to use this occasion to remind Nigerians that the problems of hunger, poverty, and inequality are not specific to a particular ethnicity or religion, but cut across the nation. Thus, the task ahead of us, as political leaders and as citizens, is to continue to beat the drums of unity, social justice, and social equality to form one united front that will stand in solidarity against the many challenges that confront our nation,” he emphasised.

The presidential candidate of the Liberal Party put up a plan for moving forward based on sincerity, purposefulness, and mutual trust and cooperation. In his ideal Nigeria, the government would be strictly held accountable and leaders would be selected on the basis of their qualifications rather than their ancestry or religion.

In his address, Obi voiced optimism for a “New and United Nigeria,” laying forth a vision in which the people work together to build a brighter future free from hate speech and centred on the advancement of the country.
