The soldiers of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) have received appreciation from Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), for their efforts in addressing the increasing security issues in Plateau.

Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye made the statement on Monday at a luncheon in Mangu on behalf of Mr. Lagbaja.

This follows attacks on two local government areas in the Plateau by suspected herdsmen, which left at least 112 civilians dead and 47 injured.

On Christmas Eve, the attackers—who were thought to be herdsmen—targeted 12 settlements in the council districts of Barkin Ladi and Bokkos.

The mission of OPSH, a special military task group, is to keep the Plateau and certain areas of Bauchi and Kaduna peaceful.

According to Mr. Lagbaja, the purpose of the luncheon was to thank the troops for their tenacity in maintaining peace throughout the Plateau and all of Nigeria.

“At the moment, over 50,000 officers and men are on duty in various communities across the nation.

“So, we have put this luncheon to boost the morale of our troops in tackling the insecurity currently confronting us in Nigeria.

“I desire to return our troops home to their families in safety. So, we are going to drop the number of troops on internal security and build the capacity of other security agencies in addressing all internal security challenges,” he said.

Abdusalam Abubakar, thanked the COAS for the luncheon, saying it will inspire the soldiers to perform better.

He emphasised the operation’s noteworthy accomplishments in the last few months, particularly the beginning of a special operation known as “Operation Hakorin Damisa IV.”

He said, “We have recovered over 200 illegal arms, large cache of ammunition, neutralised bandits and busted weapon manufacturing factories in the state.
