Federal Workers In Pain As Tinubu’s Govt Delays December Salaries

Federal employees in a variety of government departments are voicing their dissatisfaction and disappointment as the Bola Tinubu-led administration is unable to pay their December 2023 salary in time for Christmas.

Many employees of federal ministries, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHoCSF), and other national organisations will have a dismal holiday season as a result of this delay.

Employees indicated that the lack of their anticipated pay has had a major influence on customary festivities, such as parties, expensive feasts, and scheduled visits.

Other civil servants’ discontent has been exacerbated by reports that only federal employees in revenue-generating agencies like NNPC, NPA, NIMASA, NCC, CBN, and FIRS have received their December wages.

Sickened employees told Daily Trust in interviews that they were unable to participate in traditional festivities due to unforeseen delays and financial difficulties.

“Despite the general apprehensions about previous administrations, I cannot recall any instances in which our December salaries were delayed,” a worker commented.

Even though the government announced a 50% drop in transit costs, a lack of funding prevented many workers from benefiting from the alleviation.

Another civil servant stated, “With the way things are ‘tough’ in the country, we don’t even have savings. We were excited when they announced a 50 per cent discount on transportation, but sadly despite the support many people could not travel ahead of Christmas.

“How can we travel and enjoy the so called 50 per cent transport reduction, when we don’t have monies in our pockets?

Due to the salary delay, a University of Abuja employee voiced concern over their inability to celebrate the holidays with their families.

“There is no excuse whatsoever, to say the truth. They removed the subsidy, they said they have been saving monies since June. This is over six months but we rarely get our salaries before the end of the month.

“I got my November salary in the second week of December. Now that it is the end of the year and it is the Christmas season, we thought they would pay us around the 20th or 22nd. Sadly, they did not…We only went to church, returned home and we are waiting for the public holiday to end so that we can continue with our life,” he revealed.

Others underlined that, given the return of classes, the postponement not only affected Christmas festivities but also created issues with paying bills in January.

Despite the difficulties, a senior government official gave the assurance that steps are being taken to guarantee salary disbursement by Monday night and to settle the matter quickly.
