Hon Edison Ehie Was Never Elected Speaker – Rivers Assembly Clerk Reveals

The Rivers State House of Assembly has made it clear that Edison Ehie, a supporter of Fubara, was never elected Speaker and has denied any assertions to the contrary.

Emeka Amadi, the Clerk of the Assembly, responded to Ehie’s letter of resignation as Speaker by providing the explanation. Tensions between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the minister in charge of the Federal Capital Territory, were allegedly intended to be eased by the departure.

After the political unrest, 26 Assembly members who had been elected under the PDP later defected to the APC, leading Ehie to declare their seats vacant.

Impeachment: Fubara Reacts To Removal Of Rivers Assembly Leader

The notice was given by the Clerk in response to a letter dated December 29, 2023, which was written and signed by Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie DSSRS, a member of the Rivers State Assembly representing Ahoada East Constituency II. In the letter, Ehie claimed to have resigned from his position as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, an office he never held.

The notice reads, “The attention of the Rivers State House of Assembly has been drawn to a letter dated 29 December, 2023, addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and circulating in the media.

The document supposedly had the writing and signature of Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie, DSSRS, a member of the Rivers State Assembly who represents Ahoada East Constituency II. In it, he announced his resignation from the role of Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, an office he never held.

Impeachment: Rivers Assembly Removes Majority Leader, Three Others

“I am therefore directed to call on the good people of Rivers State to disregard the false claim in this letter that is intended to mislead the unsuspecting public. Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie DSSRS was never, at any time in the life of the Rivers State House of Assembly, elected Speaker.”

In the middle of the turmoil, the Assembly struggles with a split allegiance; 26 members support Wike, while Ehie and three other members stick with Fubara.
