The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced plans to transfer former president of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bal Koroma, to Nigeria. Koroma is accused of masterminding the failed coup attempt on November 26, 2023.

Omar Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, made the news, disclosing that Koroma’s action is in accordance with a deal struck during a high-level delegation visit to Freetown.

Concerns about instability in West Africa were increased by the failed coup, which saw armed attackers overrun police stations and military installations, killing 21 people and allowing many more to elude capture. In a decisive move, Sierra Leone accused 12 people of treason, among them Amadu Koita, a former soldier and Koroma’s former bodyguard.

President Touray disclosed, “The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has offered to host His Excellency Ernest Bal Horoma in Abuja on a temporary basis.” Koroma, accepting the offer, is expected to depart Freetown on Thursday, January 4, 2024, accompanied by his office manager and personal assistant.

The statement went on to list additional requirements for Koroma’s exit, such as ending the lawsuits against him, continuing to pay his benefits, and safeguarding his homes in Sierra Leone. The government also thinks about paying back the medical and travel costs he incurred.
