Regarding Edison Ehie’s decision to step down as the factional speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, some new information has come to light.

Recall that Ehie, a staunch supporter of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stepped down from both his role and his House membership. According to Naija News, Edison tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 29, 2023, which he personally signed.

The letter was sent to Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman.

Ehie was the majority leader of the House prior to taking the Speakership during the political crisis that shook Rivers State due to the disagreement between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Ehie became the factional speaker of the house during the conflict and had four supporters while he declared the seats of the 27 pro-Wike house members to be vacant.

But once President Bola Tinubu intervened and a peace agreement was struck in Abuja, Ehie quit as Speaker of the Rivers Assembly as well as from the legislature.

It has since come to light that his choice was influenced by additional considerations, some of which were first obscure.

According to a source cited by Daily Trust, Ehie was pressured to step down by Wike’s camp, which intended to embarrass him if he went back to the assembly, in addition to carrying out the provisions of the peace resolution in Abuja.

The insider, who begged to remain anonymous, claimed that Ehie’s resignation also cleared the path for the adoption of the peace agreement that Wike and Fubara had started.

He continued by saying that Ehie’s only remaining option was to step down given the recognition of the eight resolutions in the peace deal by the assembly’s twenty-seven members who were loyal to Wike.

It is also understood that Ehie has been scheduled to take over for Governor Fubara’s Chief of Staff, Wike supporter Chidi Amadi.

“If Martins Amaehwule is recognised by Fubara, the best option left for Ehie is to resign if not he will have a very unfriendly House.

“His rumoured appointment as Chief of Staff to the governor will open another phase of crisis between Fubara and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory because the present Chief of Staff is Wike’s kinsman and was appointed by the minister. So, removing him and bringing Ehie will open another phase of the war between Wike and Fubara,” the source stated.
