11 Trapped in Zimbabwe’s Redwing Mine After Ground Collapse

On Thursday morning, 11 subsistence mining workers were trapped in an underground shaft at Zimbabwe’s Redwing mining due to a ground collapse.

The capital city of Harare is about 270 km west of the mine.

In a statement, Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Mines said that the catastrophe might have been triggered by earth tremors. Additionally, it stated that Redwing Mine’s owner, Metallon Corporation, has verified the incident.

In a different statement, Metallon announced that company has dispatched a rescue squad to free the trapped miners. “The group has attempted multiple rescues. Rescue efforts are risky, though, because the ground is still unstable. To ensure that the rescue operations go place as securely as possible as fast as possible, our personnel are carefully evaluating the ground conditions, the organisation stated.

The business added that Redwing has been the site of unauthorised mining operations by subsistence miners since 2020, when the mine was placed under corporate rescue.
