Nigerian Army Arrests Soldier for ‘Insults’ Against Gov Sanwo-Olu

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, has declared the arrest of a soldier for defaming Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on social media.

The soldier was arrested by security guards accompanying the governor’s convoy after it was claimed that he was riding in violation of traffic laws in Lagos.

One of Sanwo-Olu’s media assistants, Wale Ajetunmobi, posted a video on X that the COAS said was not from an Army member, despite other videos featuring the governor being insulted. Some military soldiers reacted angrily to the footage on social media.

Speaking with journalists in Enugu State, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja voiced worry, highlighting how the soldier’s actions went against the professionalism and ideals expected of the Nigerian Army.

He stressed that Army personnel were not included in other films that were making the rounds on social media and contained obscenities aimed at the governor.

Assuring the public that the arrested soldier will be subject to disciplinary actions in line with military protocols, the Chief of Army Staff emphasised the military’s dedication to upholding cordial relations with civilian authorities.

Lagbaja stated, “I want to say that the soldier that was apprehended by the governor of Lagos state for plying one way does not represent the Nigerian Army.

“Because, in every respect, he contravened what we stand for, which is discipline as an Army, and it contravenes the constitution and the laws of Lagos. So, we frown at that as an Army.

“But for what you alleged that soldiers have gone to social media casting aspersions on the person and the office of the governor, it is only one soldier that has done that. The Army has investigated, that soldier has been apprehended and we are investigating.

“For every comical act that you have seen on social media, they are not personnel of the Nigerian Army,” he emphasised.
