Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, expressed shock at the N3 billion approved for Nigeria’s national registry of the poor’s verification, highlighting the necessity of funding the National Library and reducing poverty instead.

He emphasised the urgent necessity to solve the problem of the high cost of government in the nation in his remark on his X handle.

Regretfully, the enormous sum that was authorised solely for the purpose of validating the national registration of the poor surpasses by three times the N908,699,435 allocated for our National Library.

Obi expressed regret that the money authorised for the verification procedure exceeded three times the funding allotted to the National Library, an essential institution in the country but is currently lacking in books and educational materials.

Obi underlined the value of spending money on worker training to increase labour force productivity, particularly in light of the serious issues the country is currently facing. He expressed disapproval of what appeared to be an excessive distribution of monies, arguing that a more careful and open handling of the authorised sum would have had a greater and more meaningful effect.

“This is happening at a time in our nation when we need all the manpower training to to keep our work force productive. Our national library, a very critical infrastructure in our nation, seemingly abandoned, lacks books and educational materials.

“The same amount, would have made a significant impact, if prudently and transparently managed. Moreso, with more than half of our population battling with absolute and multi dimensional poverty, one wonders why such a huge sum was approved for just verification of national register of the poor, when the same amount could have been directed towards actual poverty alleviation.

“This approval raises a fundamental question: how come the data for poverty alleviation has not been verified on a regular basis? Obi said.

He emphasised how important it is for leaders to forgo their comfort in order to further the interests of society, especially those of the underprivileged.

Obi issued a warning, saying that the country would continue to struggle with a number of societal problems brought on by high rates of poverty unless it changed its course and showed greater concern for its citizens, especially those who are impoverished.
