When New Minimum Wage Committee Will Be Ready – FG Reveals

The committee to establish a new national minimum wage is expected to be constituted by the end of this month, according to information released by the federal government.

The Nation cited Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the minister of state for labour and employment, as saying that he made the statement yesterday in Abuja.

“I’m confident the panel will be installed before the month ends,” she remarked.

FG Asks Labour Not To Go On Strike Over Minimum Wage Bill

According to Anaedoonline.ng, former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the N30,000 minimum salary into law on April 18, 2019.

But since President Bola Tinubu’s administration eliminated the fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, the nation’s labour unions, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have been pushing for a wage increase to reflect current realities.

The goal of Organised Labour is to raise the national wage to N200,000.

We have learned that President Tinubu requested the list of members of the tripartite committee during the most recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Concurrently, the nation’s labour unions have received assurances from the federal government that it will keep all of its commitments to them and to Nigerian employees.

During her visit to the Trade Union Congress (TUC) office last Wednesday, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, made the pledge on behalf of the government.

She gave her word that the government will honour the N35,000 salary award in full, including any unpaid balance owed to the workers, and that it would also take care of the new minimum wage.

The Minister emphasised that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is labor-friendly, but she also requested the unions to keep lines of communication open with the government.
