Plans to transfer the final 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Taraba State’s Kashimbilla hydropower facility to the national grid have been made public by the federal government.

Only 10 megawatts of the 40 megawatt installed capacity of the Kashimbilla power plant are currently being evacuated because of inadequate transmission infrastructure.

During an inspection tour of the power plant and the 56-kilometer, 132 kilovolt (KV) transmission line that runs from Yandev in Benue State to Makurdi, the state capital, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed this information.

The minister claimed that the power plant was outfitted with cutting-edge technology, such as an automated tracking and monitoring system (SCADA), and that it was operating efficiently in a statement sent by his media assistant, Bolaji Tunji.

He claimed that after the transmission infrastructure is finished, the plant’s four turbines will be able to evacuate the entire 40 megawatts.

“We have begun the process, and we have the assurance of the contractors that this will be completed within the next six months to one year. The moment we are done with the evacuation infrastructure, the stranded 30 MW will be evacuated, and the four turbines will be working at full capacity of 10 megawatts each to make 40. And this will increase the generation capacity that will be evacuated into the national grid,” he said.

The minister further stated that the four turbines at the Kashimbilla power plant were producing 100% of their installed capacity while at the 132/33KV substation in Amua, Gboko Local Government Area, Benue.

He clarified that there were two phases to the Kashimbilla project and said that the first phase, which was finished, comprised two 60 megavolt ampere (MVA) substations in Taraba State’s Takum and Wukari local government areas as well as a 7.5 MVA substation in the state’s Donga local government area.

According to him, phase two entailed building the 132/33KVA substation in Yandev, Benue, as well as the 56-kilometer transmission lines that would connect the power to the national grid.

The minister stated that it was not in the best interests of the nation’s economy for 30 megawatts of electricity to be left stranded at the Kashimbilla power plant.
