ECOWAS Denies Burkina Faso, Maili and Niger Membership Withdrawal

According to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), three of its members—Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have not yet formally announced their intention to leave the group.

The three nations, which are presently governed by military coups, have not formally notified the Commission, according to a statement released by the Commission on Sunday.

In addition, the Commission called for discussion and diplomacy to end the political impasse and reiterated its commitment to restore constitutional order and democracy in the impacted nations.

In order to address the security and humanitarian issues in the Sahel region, ECOWAS stated that it is still willing to working with the transitional authorities in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger as well as other regional and international partners.

The three nations made the announcement on state television earlier on Sunday, claiming the bloc was renouncing pan-Africanism and implementing “inhumane” penalties. They also claimed the countries had decided to exit ECOWAS “immediately and without delay.”

The three nations further asserted that they had not received support from ECOWAS in their battle against insecurity and terrorism.

With 15 member states, ECOWAS was established in 1975 with the goal of advancing political stability and economic integration in West Africa.

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger’s involvement in the bloc has been stopped due to the coups that overthrew their elected governments in 2020 and 2023.

Additionally, ECOWAS has requested the return of civilian authority and the holding of free and fair elections, as well as imposed diplomatic and economic sanctions on the junta-led nations.
