The EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) has intensified its investigation into alleged fraudulent practices within the Federal Ministry of Aviation during the tenure of former Minister Hadi Sirika. The focus of the investigation has shifted to contracts awarded to Abubakar Ahmad Sirika, the younger brother of the ex-minister, totaling approximately N8.06 billion.

Abubakar Sirika, who holds a Level-16 position as a deputy director in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, is facing scrutiny over his company, Engirios Nigeria Limited, which was allegedly awarded four significant contracts during his brother’s time as minister. These contracts include the construction of a Fire Truck Maintenance and Refurbishment Centre in Katsina Airport, the procurement and installation of various equipment in the Aviation House, Abuja, and the acquisition of aircraft and simulators for the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria.

The EFCC’s investigation has revealed that a substantial portion of the contract sum, amounting to about N3.21 billion, was transferred to Engirios Nigeria Limited, which is owned by Abubakar Sirika. Despite these payments, there is reportedly no evidence of work being carried out on any of the contract items to date.

Furthermore, it has been alleged that the contracts were awarded to Abubakar Sirika’s company with the knowledge that he is a senior civil servant, raising questions of abuse of office and conflict of interest. The timeline of the contracts, ranging from August 2022 to May 2023, coincides with Hadi Sirika’s tenure as Minister of Aviation.

The EFCC is currently investigating multiple allegations against Abubakar Sirika, including conspiracy, abuse of office, diversion of public funds, contract inflation, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering. Investigators are also examining the controversial Nigeria Air project, amid conflicting reports regarding the amount of funds allocated and expended on the initiative.
