On Tuesday morning, students at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State, protested against the increase in tuition prices.
After some thugs allegedly joined the protesters and damaged some university property, the protest turned violent.
They also attacked a few employees and the vice chancellor’s vehicle.
In response, the university administration declared an immediate suspension of all academic activity and gave the students orders to vacate the campus by Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

The decision was made to “notify the public that the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State woke up to experience the violation of the long-existing peace of the university this morning,” according to a statement released by the vice chancellor, professor Maduebibisi Iwe.
In support of the Senate, he continued, the administration of the institution was required to “protect life and properties on campus” by closing it “indefinitely.”
He pleaded with the students to maintain their composure and gave them his word that the situation would be handled amicably.
He denounced the miscreants’ behaviour as well, who exploited the circumstances to wreak havoc.
