Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential contender for 2023, has expressed worries about the growing level of insecurity afflicting Nigeria.
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi emphasised the critical necessity for quick action to stop the nation’s ongoing violence and bring about peace.
“While the idea of State Policing…is a welcome development, all efforts, at the moment, should be geared towards ending the ugly trend of insecurity in the nation,” emphasized Obi, echoing the sentiments of many Nigerians grappling with the daily horrors of terror attacks and kidnappings.
Insecurity Should Not Be Allowed To Continue – Peter Obi To Nigerian Govt
Obi emphasised the need for decisive steps to address the grave security situation and warned against complacency in the interim until state police forces are put into place. Citing incidences in Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, and other areas where innocent lives have been sacrificed to mindless acts of terrorism, he denounced the latest wave of violence.
“The high level of insecurity…forms a perfect recipe for disaster in our nation,” warned Obi, underscoring the grave implications of unchecked violence amidst widespread hunger and poverty.
Given these difficulties, Obi urged the government and security services to move quickly to put an end to the terror that insurgents, bandits, and other criminal groups were committing. Regardless of their location or situation, he called for prompt and decisive action to guarantee the safety and security of all Nigerians.

“I commiserate with the families who have lost dear ones…while praying for the safe rescue of those in captivity,” expressed Obi, extending his heartfelt condolences to victims of violent attacks while advocating for concerted efforts to safeguard the lives and property of all citizens.
Talks about creating state police units have accelerated in response to Obi’s passionate call for immediate action. Adopting state police has come up as a possible remedy for the country’s security issues after Chief Bola Tinubu called an emergency meeting of state governors at the Aso Rock Villa.
Although the idea of state police has sparked discussion and scepticism, it also provides a glimpse of hope for resolving localised security issues. Senator Shehu Sani, a social critic and former politician, issued a warning about the dangers of political manipulation and chaos as well as the possible traps of state police.
