The Edo State Police Command have apprehended Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), in Benin City. Abure’s arrest stems from allegations of premeditated attempted murder and other purported infractions.

The arrest follows a petition lodged by the LP Youth Leader, Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia, addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command. In the petition dated February 13, Anselm recounts a harrowing incident of violence perpetrated against him on December 29, 2023.

According to Anselm’s testimony, he arrived at Benin City Airport as part of an official delegation authorized by the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Alhaji Lamidi Basiru Apapa. However, upon arrival, they were allegedly deceived by Mrs. Mary Okheime Newberry, who claimed to provide transportation and accommodation on behalf of undisclosed “stakeholders.”

Unbeknownst to Anselm and his colleagues, they were ensnared in a sinister plot. The following morning, they were purportedly lured into an ambush orchestrated by Austin Emeka, resulting in a violent attack just outside the hotel gates.

The petition details the traumatic experience and implicates Abure in the alleged conspiracy. Consequently, the Edo State Police Command took swift action, culminating in Abure’s arrest on Wednesday.
