It’s Time to go Back to Drawing Board, Nigeria Has Failed – Ango Abdullahi

According to Abdullahi Ango, the convener of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Nigerians need to start over because the nation’s mechanisms are ineffective.

This was stated by Mr. Abdullahi, a former vice chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, on Saturday at the book launch for Umar Ardo’s “Court and Politics” in Abuja.

“Something is wrong with everybody, everyone,” he said, lamenting that 64 years after gaining independence, Nigeria, a country home to over 200 million people, could only produce 4,000 megawatts. Everyone is at fault.

He said, “Looking at present reality in the country, everyone, both the leaders and the led, have failed the country.

“Today, we’ve just had power failure; for 64 years, we have had 4,000 megawatts, what a shame. 4,000 megawatts of electricity is not enough for one big house in another country.

“For those of us who from time to time go to Saudi Arabia on pilgrimage, I should remind you that the Masjid al-Haram, the Makkah mosque, uses 18,000 megawatts of electricity daily.

“The time has come for us to really go back to the drawing board so that all of us can be safe.”

Mr. Abdullahi noted that Nigeria had operated under a parliamentary system of government from 1960 to 1966 and said that the presidential system was too costly for the nation to implement due to its high resource requirements.
