SIM/NIN Linkage: 11.2m Mobile Lines Barred – NCC Reveals

The Commission on Communications in Nigeria Verifies That Telecom Companies Disallow Unlinked SIMs

The telecom companies have barred all Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) that are not associated with their owners’ National Identity Numbers (NINs), according to confirmation from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The NCC gave operators permission to terminate over 11.2 million lines last week because their owners had forgotten to link them to their NINs.

The commission’s order was issued following the months-long deadline last year for telecom consumers to connect their SIM cards to their NINs by February 28.

Reuben Mouka, a spokesman for the Commission, asserted on Monday that the disconnected customers had not given the NIN-SIM linkage much thought.

In a Monday interview with Channels Television, Mouka underlined that improving security and national planning is the policy’s main goal.

“It will be difficult to place a hand on the actual number of phone lines that have been barred. But take it that everybody who has not submitted NIN to service providers has been barred.
