The Labour party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, has issued a warning about the severe food problem that Nigeria is currently experiencing. Obi conveyed his profound concern on the worsening food crisis in the country in a statement that addressed the latest results of the Cadre Harmonisé, a UNICEF publication.

Nearly 25 million Nigerians were recognised as being at danger of starvation between June and August 2023, according to the Cadre Harmonisé report. This number increased to almost 26.5 million at the end of the same year, suggesting a downward trend. Now, the latest report warns that an additional 31.5 million Nigerians are at risk of acute hunger and serious food insecurity between June and August 2024.

Obi underlined how urgently this problem needs to be addressed with swift action. He emphasised the significance of changing the emphasis from consumption to production, especially by making significant investments in agriculture. Obi said, “Transforming Nigeria from a consumption to a production nation is the most reliable way to combat hunger in our country.”

Obi emphasised the problems impeding agricultural productivity, citing widespread insecurity and terror attacks as major issues that have affected farming operations across the nation. He also expressed worries about the detrimental effects of monetary policy on small farms and related companies.

“The government must secure the farmers and give them adequate support for increased food production,” Obi asserted, underlining the critical role of government intervention in boosting agricultural output.

The gravity of the crisis is highlighted by Nigeria’s current Global Hunger Index position of 109 out of 125 countries. The high cost of living and inflation compound the situation, with households spending nearly all of their income on food, leaving many families unable to meet their basic needs.

Obi encouraged the government to act quickly to prevent the approaching hunger catastrophe in view of these concerning numbers. “In order to combat the growing hunger and related resentment, we need to act quickly to increase food production in the nation,” he underlined.

Obi stated that creating a productive Nigeria needs to continue to be the primary goal. Despite the difficulties, he voiced hope that the country can overcome its hunger issue and pave the way for future prosperity with coordinated efforts and sensible policies.
