Peter Obi Laments Food Crisis in Nigeria on World Food Day

by Ikem Emmanuel

On World Food Day, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, expressed his concern about the severe food crisis that continues to affect many Nigerian households. He lamented that a significant majority of Nigerians are struggling to afford enough food despite spending their entire disposable income on it.

Obi urged the government to find urgent solutions to address this food crisis that plagues the nation. He highlighted the challenges posed by the food crisis, noting that Nigeria faces serious hunger levels, as indicated by the Global Hunger Index. Reports from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reveal that over 90 million Nigerians are food insecure, which hinders healthy living and human development.

In the 2023 Global Hunger Index, Nigeria ranked 109th out of 125 countries assessed, indicating a high level of hunger in the country. Additionally, food inflation in Nigeria reached approximately 30 percent year-on-year in August 2023.

Obi pointed out that constant attacks on farmers by armed and terrorist groups further exacerbate the food crisis by hindering food production and supplies. He also emphasized the need for significant investment in agriculture to boost food production in Nigeria.

Obi suggested that the vast fertile lands in the Northern region, if effectively utilized for agriculture, could provide enough food for domestic consumption and even for exports, potentially surpassing the revenue generated from oil exports.

To combat the food crisis, he called on the government to prioritize and invest heavily in agriculture, ensuring sufficient food production for both Nigeria and the global market. World Food Day serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing food security challenges and working towards a hunger-free world.
