Soldiers from the Ughelli South Local Government Area in Delta State’s Okuama village continue to destroy houses in the wake of the recent attack that claimed the lives of multiple military soldiers during a rescue operation in the riverbank settlement.

A local source claims that there is still a significant military presence in Okuama and that multiple homes are reportedly being demolished on a regular basis.

The military Joint Task Force, JTF, Bomadi Division, led by Commander Maj. Jaffa, lost 222 battalions last week when they were ambushed and killed while on a rescue mission in Okuama.

Their goal was to release Mr. Anthony Aboh, who was being held captive in Delta State’s Bomadi Local Government Area because of a protracted land dispute with the nearby Okoloba village.

The following day, more soldiers died, which heightened tensions. The military’s ensuing reprisal against Okuama forced the cowardly attackers to flee, and they are still at large as the military is conducting a massive manhunt in the nearby towns.

In addition, a well-known former militant leader and his group—who were purportedly hired by the Okuama community to face Okoloba—have been named as key suspects and are presently at large. In the meantime, evacuated residents of the Ughelli South Local Government Area, especially women and children, seek safety with relatives in other communities.

The Head of Personnel Management, HPM, Ughelli South Local Government, Mr. Austin Emaduku, responded as follows when asked to comment on a potential humanitarian crisis in the council area: “First and foremost, I’m a civil servant and not an elected officer and I have my restrictions speaking to the press.”

“Besides that, the state government has issued a statement on the crisis and the public should take that for now.”
